What you are paying for
The price of a perfume reflects many things besides the liquid: brand, bottle and packaging, marketing, distribution, and the size of the production run. A higher price does not guarantee a scent you will like more.
Entry tier
- Often body mists, EDTs, and larger value bottles.
- Widely available in drugstores and mass retailers.
- Good for trying a family or style without committing much.
Mid tier
- Many designer EDTs and EDPs, plus travel sizes and sets.
- Wide choice of styles and concentrations.
- Sampling is usually easy at department stores.
Upper tier
- Many niche houses, parfum concentrations, and premium bottles.
- Smaller distribution, sometimes only through brand stores or select retailers.
- Samples and discovery sets are common ways in.

Ways to spend wisely at any level
- Sample before buying a full bottle.
- Buy a smaller size first.
- Consider whether you want the strongest concentration, or a lighter one you can wear more freely.
- Buy from retailers you trust. Prices, sizes, concentrations, and availability change, and brands may reformulate a fragrance. Check the label and the retailer before you buy.
FAQ
Not necessarily. Price reflects many costs. Judge the scent on your skin.
Often per milliliter, but only if you will finish them while they still smell right.
Buy from retailers you trust. Counterfeits exist, and you cannot always tell from a photo.
General information, not medical advice. Patch test new fragrances and stop use if irritation occurs. See a doctor about skin reactions or breathing concerns.
